Guagua's Prewar Rocket Replica Slide
from the Guagua Central Elementary School Playground.
As I sit down to reflect on my childhood, one particular memory stands out vividly in my mind—the "PREWAR ROCKET REPLICA SLIDE" (Please refer to the illustration below) that once graced the playground of Guagua Central Elementary School. This school holds a special place in the history of Guagua, Pampanga, having been established in 1901 as the First Town School. Although I did not attend this school, my weekends were often spent at its playground, where laughter and joy filled the air.
The illustration simply shows/captures the moment when the rocket replica was installed atop the playground slide, a cherished memory from my childhood. The fun brought to life the excitement of that day. The slide stands tall, with the rocket perched proudly above it, symbolizing adventure and imagination. Reminiscing the surrounding elements, such as other children playing and the sunny sky, enhance the joyful atmosphere, making it a nostalgic reminder of carefree days spent in my favorite playground.
A Playground of Memories
The playground was a magical place for children like me. Among the various play structures, the most captivating was undoubtedly the rocket replica perched atop a slide. I can still picture it clearly: a metal structure that sparked our imaginations and transported us to worlds beyond our own. The slide itself was an inviting sight, with its smooth surface beckoning us to climb up and glide down with glee.
What made this rocket even more special was its weathered appearance. Even during those times, I believe that there had been no repainting done on the metalwork used for the entire playground over the years. The rust that adorned the rocket was a testament to its long-standing presence and history. It stood there proudly, despite its age, serving as a reminder of simpler times when children played freely without a care in the world.
A Cherished Keepsake
In 1998, when I began building my house near Guagua Central Elementary School, fate led me back to that beloved playground. I learned that the rocket replica had been removed due to safety concerns; it had become rusted and posed a risk of injury to children who played nearby. With a heavy heart but an understanding of the necessity for safety, I decided to rescue this piece of history.
Purchasing the rocket replica felt like reclaiming a part of my childhood—a tangible connection to those carefree days spent playing under the sun with friends. It now sits proudly in my home as a cherished keepsake, reminding me not only of my youth but also of the importance of preserving memories.
A Symbol of Innocence
The prewar rocket replica symbolizes innocence and joy from my childhood days at Guagua Central Elementary School’s playground. Every time I look at it, I’m transported back to those weekends filled with laughter and adventure. It serves as a reminder that while we grow older and life changes around us, some memories remain timeless—etched forever in our hearts.
In sharing this story about this treasured rocket replica, I hope to inspire others to cherish their own memories and hold onto pieces of their past that bring them joy.
